In most cases, however, I found King’s estimates of films helpful and perceptive. In the introduction, King describes his book as ‘a companion to the spiritual life’. It is, but generally at amore academic level rather than one practically connected to the everyday realities of spiritual endeavour. Of course both are necessary but they can, I think, be equally present in the one work. At certain points I wondered whether the book would have been more helpfully structured around the main stages of life and key challenges or demands that occur in these. But perhaps that is another book the author could offer us as a companion to this.
