“ABUSANDO DA FRAQUEZA E SIMPLICIDADE DO OFENDIDO" Significados da liberdade e da escravidão, trabalho e ensino na fronteira meridional do Império brasileiro (século XIX)

The goal of this article is to analyze the tense field of the meanings of freedom and slavery in nineteenth century Brazil, taking as a locus the Southern border of the Empire. The implications of the existence of ever more porous and interchangeable boundaries between the status of bondage and freedom are pursued. We will consider the frequent transit of rural workers, livestock and farmers by the limits of the platinoscountries, and how this implied in the daily life of the labor experiences and in the consideration of the status of the black individuals involved. In addition, considering the prohibition of the frequency of free blacks, linings and enslaved in the public classes of Rio Grande do Sul, we will analyze how to participate in this school space carried a symbolism linked to the affirmation of autonomy and freedom.
