Automation of the instrument renders easily feasible the evaluation of proposed antisickling compounds. Drugs representative of the three modes of action presently recognized have been selected: those which increase oxygen affinity (potassium cyanate); those which inhibit hemoglobin polymerization (butylurea); membrane-active compounds.
