Acute occlusion of the subclavian vein in an athlete: diagnosis, etiology and surgical management.

The first report of the entity known as &dquo;effort thrombosis&dquo; of the subclavian vein was made by Paget in 18751 followed by one in a similar vein by Schroetter in 1884.’ Since that time, many cases have been reported in the literature, the most extensive of which is that of Hughes3 who collected 320 cases from the literature up until 1949.
