Relaxation training for vasomotor symptoms and body awareness in menopausal and postmenopausal women
Introduction
The aim of our study was to examine the effects of relaxation training on vasomotor symptoms and body awareness in menopausal and postmenopausal periods.
Method
48 volunteered women (24 menopausal and 24 postmenopausal, aged 50–65 years) were included in our study. Participants were given a 30-min relaxation training via online platform, 3 days a week for 6 weeks. Participants were evaluated with Menopausal Symptoms Rating Scale (MSRS), Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Body Awareness Questionnaire and Body Perception Scale before and after the training.
Results
A statistically significant difference was found between the relaxation training before and after training on vasomotor symptoms, body awareness and body perception in menopausal and postmenopausal periods (all p < 0.01). There was a significant difference between before and after training (p < 0.01) in sleep quality, while there was no significant difference between before and after training in the postmenopausal period (p = 0.070).
Discussion
Decreasing vasomotor symptoms, increasing body awareness and body image is beneficial for women to adapt to the menopausal process more easily and to manage the process more comfortably. Relaxation training might have positive effects on this process.
Conclusion
Our results showed that positive effects may be achieved with relaxation training in menopausal and postmenopausal periods.
