Effects of sodium bicarbonate and carbohydrate intake after 14-h fasting on anaerobic performance and muscular endurance: A randomized placebo-controlled trial
Background
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of 14-h fasting on anaerobic performance and muscular endurance in active men, considering the role of pre-exercise sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) and carbohydrate (CHO) intake.
Methods
Fourteen trained men (22.36 ± 1.28 years; BMI: 23.37 ± 2.00 kg/m2; body fat: 13.09 ± 5.10 %) participated in a crossover design study. They underwent five testing sessions, separated by a one-week washout period: a baseline trial in the fed state, followed by four trials after 14 h of fasting with either CHO, NaHCO3, or a placebo (sodium chloride) ingestion. The anaerobic performance was estimated using the Running-Based Anaerobic Sprint Test (RAST), and muscular endurance was tested through leg and bench press repetitions to failure.
Results
14-h fasting enhanced anaerobic performance by 10 % (P < 0.05) and muscular endurance by 24 % (P < 0.01) compared to the fed state. NaHCO3 supplementation increased anaerobic power by 21 % (P < 0.01) and reduced fatigue by 37 % (P < 0.05), whereas CHO intake had a minor effect on anaerobic performance but improved endurance. There was no significant difference in Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) across conditions. NaHCO3 caused mild gastrointestinal discomfort.
Conclusion
A 14-h overnight fast may enhance anaerobic performance and muscular endurance in trained males. NaHCO3 supplementation further enhances power output while reducing fatigue; However, we should consider gastrointestinal discomfort when implementing this strategy.
