Adaptation and psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of the Lincoln Canine Anxiety Scale
Canine anxiety is an emotional state that affects both the animal's well-being and its relationship with owners, often being associated with problematic behaviors. The Lincoln Canine Anxiety Scale (LCAS) was developed to reliably measure canine anxiety, particularly in response to loud noises such as fireworks. In this study, the LCAS was adapted into Portuguese and for the Brazilian cultural context, with its psychometric properties tested in relation to a broad set of anxiety-inducing situations, analyzed collectively. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a bidimensional structure, distinguishing behaviors related to behavioral inhibition (Passivity Factor) from those reflecting behavioral activation (Activity Factor). Reliability and consistency indicators, McDonald’s omega, Composite Reliability and ordinal Cronbach’s alpha, supported the adequacy of the factors (Passivity: ω = 0.82, CR = 0.84, α = 0.82; Activity: ω = 0.74, CR = 0.76 α = 0.74,). Confirmatory factor analysis further supported the internal structure. Item response theory analyses indicated adequate item discrimination, ordered thresholds, and no differential item functioning by dog or owner sex. These results offer evidence of internal structure and response pattern validity of the LCAS-Br.
期刊介绍:
This journal publishes relevant information on the behaviour of domesticated and utilized animals.
Topics covered include:
-Behaviour of farm, zoo and laboratory animals in relation to animal management and welfare
-Behaviour of companion animals in relation to behavioural problems, for example, in relation to the training of dogs for different purposes, in relation to behavioural problems
-Studies of the behaviour of wild animals when these studies are relevant from an applied perspective, for example in relation to wildlife management, pest management or nature conservation
-Methodological studies within relevant fields
The principal subjects are farm, companion and laboratory animals, including, of course, poultry. The journal also deals with the following animal subjects:
-Those involved in any farming system, e.g. deer, rabbits and fur-bearing animals
-Those in ANY form of confinement, e.g. zoos, safari parks and other forms of display
-Feral animals, and any animal species which impinge on farming operations, e.g. as causes of loss or damage
-Species used for hunting, recreation etc. may also be considered as acceptable subjects in some instances
-Laboratory animals, if the material relates to their behavioural requirements
