ERAS protocols: Impact on outcomes in spine surgery
Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is a multidisciplinary approach primarily aimed to improve postoperative patient outcomes and satisfaction. Over the past decade, new ERAS protocols for spine surgery have emerged in efforts to reduce opioid persistence, chronic pain, and high costs that are specific to the encompassed procedures. Despite promising results, ERAS protocols face many barriers to standardized usage globally and limited efforts to improve their application. In this narrative review, the components and benefits of spine surgery ERAS protocols, their barriers to implementation, and the strategies needed to overcome these barriers in the realm of spine surgery are discussed.

Seminars in Spine Surgery is a continuing source of current, clinical information for practicing surgeons. Under the direction of a specially selected guest editor, each issue addresses a single topic in the management and care of patients. Topics covered in each issue include basic anatomy, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, management options and follow-up of the condition under consideration. The journal also features "Spinescope," a special section providing summaries of articles from other journals that are of relevance to the understanding of ongoing research related to the treatment of spinal disorders.
