In this game, students take on the role of inorganic chemists working on the synthesis of coordination complexes in a shared laboratory setting. The primary objective is to accumulate points by synthesizing coordination complexes using a variety of metals and ligands. Initial results of this card game revealed that only 6.9% of students passed a test after conventional instruction, with a mean grade of 1.7 (3.0 is the minimum for approval). However, after the introduction of WERNER COMPLEX, the passing rate increased significantly to 48.3%, and the mean grade improved to 2.6. A paired <i>t</i> test analysis confirmed this improvement in learning outcomes (<i>t</i>(56) = −3.496, <i>p</i> = 0.001) for its design and the possibility to study in teams. The game encourages pattern recognition rather than rote memorization, aiming to enhance motivation, retention, and cognitive engagement.
