CONTRACEPTION FOLLOWING VASCULAR EVENTS. Venous and arterial thromboembolic events are uncommon diseases among women of childbearing age. Nevertheless, it is essential to support patients in their overall medical management, particularly about contraception. Combined hormonal contraception (pill, patch or vaginal contraceptives) increase the risk of venous and arterial thrombosis: they should not be used in women with a personal history of thrombosis. Progestin-only contraception (delivered as either oral, subcutaneous or intrauterine methods) seem to have no effect on venous and arterial thrombosis: they could be prescribed in these high-risk situations but should remain caution. In complex medical situations, the use of hormonal contraception should be discussed collegially, in an expert center.
