Abstract: The prevalence of substance use disorders (SUD) in the US suggests that nurses across care settings are likely to care for individuals with SUD and injection wounds associated with illicit drug use. This article discusses the systemic and dermal effects of injecting drugs as well as wound care fundamentals when caring for patients with SUD and wounds.
