Anorectal physiotherapy in coloproctology: Guidelines of the french national society of coloproctology
Anorectal physiotherapy is a safe, effective, and commonly prescribed treatment for a wide range of functional anorectal disorders. It is usually integrated into a broader medical and surgical treatment plan. For optimal outcomes, sessions must be delivered by experienced practitioners and require active patient motivation. However, access to such expertise remains limited due to a shortage of trained professionals. A clear understanding of appropriate indications and physiotherapy modalities is essential for effective patient care coordination. Currently, no national guidelines are available in France. Therefore, the French National Society of Coloproctology (SNFCP) has developed clinical practice guidelines for the use of anorectal physiotherapy in coloproctology. A panel of 15 French experts in coloproctology conducted a systematic literature review and developed graded recommendations according to HAS guidelines. When data were lacking, expert agreements were established through a voting process.
