Prevalence of canine guidance or group function guidance in the Jordanian population.
Purpose: Dental occlusion is an essential component of any successful restorative procedure. The objectives of the present investigation are to identify the percentage of the Jordanian population who have bilateral canine guidance or group function guidance and the coincidence of centric occlusion (CO) with maximal intercuspal position (MIP).
Materials and methods: Four hundred subjects (147 males and 253 females, age range 14-65 years, mean age 25.3) with complete natural permanent dentition, were recruited for the present investigation. The static and dynamic occlusion of each subject was assessed by intraoral chairside examination.
Results: Two hundred and nine (52.3%) subjects had a class I incisal relationship, 190 (47.5%) had a class II incisal relationship, and 1 (0.3%) had a class III incisal relationship. Class I molar and canine relationships were the most dominant occlusal scheme (73%-80%), followed by class II and then class III. Canine guidance, both on right and left lateral movements, was reported in 203 (51.0%) subjects, and group function guidance on both sides was recorded in 129 (32.4%) subjects. One hundred and fifty-nine subjects had orthodontic treatment, and the remaining 241 subjects did not have orthodontic treatment. The coincidence of CO and MIP was recorded in 72 (29.9%) subjects who did not have any orthodontic treatment and in 50 (31.6%) subjects who had orthodontic treatment.
Conclusion: A higher percentage of canine guidance and more coincidence between CO and MIP are found in the present investigation population compared to what is reported in the literature.
