Cirugía cardiovascular en España en el año 2023. Registro de intervenciones de la Sociedad Española de Cirugía Cardiovascular y Endovascular
This registry provides the data corresponding to cardiovascular surgery activity performed in Spain during 2023. This registry is anonymous and voluntary, and it is compiled from aggregated data from hospitals across the country, which transfer their data to the Spanish Society of Cardiovascular and Endovascular Surgery (SECCE). It is the thirty-fifth consecutive registry of cardiovascular surgical activity in our country. This registry allows for an assessment of the situation of the specialty in Spain, as well as the impact of the recent pandemic, the introduction of new interventional techniques, and the implementation of new clinical practice guidelines. The SECCE intervention registry also serves as a source of information to compare current and future procedural outcomes.
In 2023, 59 centers in Spain reported their activity, compared to 58 the previous year. A total of 32,497 interventions were performed. Of these, 21,374 were major cardiac surgeries, of which 18,940 involved the use of extracorporeal circulation. Acquired heart disease accounted for 18,708 interventions, while 1,989 were for congenital heart disease. Additionally, 3,132 peripheral vascular surgery procedures were carried out.
Regarding the type of pathology treated, 7,990 isolated valve interventions were performed, 1,651 combined valve and coronary surgeries, 4,910 isolated coronary revascularization procedures (30.16% without the use of extracorporeal circulation), 2,624 aortic surgeries, and 516 transcatheter valve prosthesis implants.
Compared to 2022, there is an increase in overall surgical activity, although data from an additional center were obtained. Therefore, the image provided by this registry is a Fairly accurate reflection of cardiovascular surgery activity in Spain. The proportion of interventions for major pathology groups remains stable compared to previous years, with isolated valve surgery once again being the most common group. In general, the observed mortality was below the mortality predicted by risk scales in most areas of the specialty.
