Simultaneous multi-order vibration suppression by centrifugal double pendulum vibration absorber with experimental validation
The centrifugal pendulum vibration absorber (CPVA) is commonly used to suppress torsional vibrations in automotive shaft systems. The centrifugal double pendulum vibration absorber (CDPVA)—a specialized type of CPVA—consists of two pendulums mounted in series on a rotor. In contrast to the CPVA, the CDPVA can simultaneously suppress torsional vibrations of two orders without the need to shorten the pendulum to address higher-order vibrations. This study clarified the vibration suppression mechanism of the CDPVA using the natural frequency diagram. Its effectiveness in simultaneously suppressing vibration with two orders was verified experimentally. Additionally, the nonlinear effects of the CDPVA were investigated through experimental observations. In detail, a numerical model was developed using a multibody dynamics approach, and nonlinear analysis was performed using the shooting method. Using the tuning equation, two sets of pendulums were tuned to specific vibration orders using their moments of inertia. Because the pendulums in each set have different inertia ratios, each set has a different capacity for suppressing vibrations at different orders. Further analysis was conducted to illustrate changes in the system’s natural frequency diagram and to clarify the effects of excitation amplitude and pendulum damping on system stability. Finally, experiments were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the CDPVA.

The Journal of Sound and Vibration (JSV) is an independent journal devoted to the prompt publication of original papers, both theoretical and experimental, that provide new information on any aspect of sound or vibration. There is an emphasis on fundamental work that has potential for practical application. JSV was founded and operates on the premise that the subject of sound and vibration requires a journal that publishes papers of a high technical standard across the various subdisciplines, thus facilitating awareness of techniques and discoveries in one area that may be applicable in others.
