Video-based lateral vibration characteristics extraction in operational rotor systems

Video-based lateral vibration characteristics extraction in operational rotor systems
Video sequences endowed with high-density spatial resolution provide a new approach to vibration measurement, replacing conventional sensing devices. Based on the vibration measurement requirements of the operational rotor system, this study proposed a method to extract rotor systems’ full-field lateral vibration signals based on phase-based video processing technology. The method was validated on a test rig, covering steady-state and dynamic-state conditions, and compared with eddy current sensors for accuracy verification. It also enabled the measurement of rotor vibration shapes. Additionally, building upon phase-based motion amplification technique, we introduce adaptive input parameters for rotor vibration amplification to streamline the visualization process and reduce subjective assessments of vibration amplitudes via color mapping. The findings of this study demonstrate that the video-based rotor system measurement method achieves accuracy close to the eddy current displacement sensors while offering significant advantages in measurement range, application complexity, and visualization.

The Journal of Sound and Vibration (JSV) is an independent journal devoted to the prompt publication of original papers, both theoretical and experimental, that provide new information on any aspect of sound or vibration. There is an emphasis on fundamental work that has potential for practical application. JSV was founded and operates on the premise that the subject of sound and vibration requires a journal that publishes papers of a high technical standard across the various subdisciplines, thus facilitating awareness of techniques and discoveries in one area that may be applicable in others.
