An autonomous driving future for the elderly: Analyzing the willingness and expectations of the elderly based on bibliometrics

Background

With the acceleration of population aging, the travel needs of the elderly are becoming a significant societal concern. In this study, we systematically reviewed and summarized the research on trust, acceptance, and attitudes related to the willingness to use age-friendly AV as well as research on elderly expectations of this technology.

Method

Based on a literature review from 2009 to 2023 in the core collection database of the Web of Science (WOS), we used the literature metrology tool Citespace for visual analysis.

Results

(1) The field has rapidly developed since 2018. (2) Three countries were leaders in literature publication. (3) The journals publishing results reflected research themes, covering risk assessment, computer technology, human-factors engineering and interface experience, social transportation, and public safety, thereby demonstrating an interdisciplinary research framework. (4) The cooperation between research clusters needs to be further strengthened. (5) The current active research areas included: individual differences among the elderly, diverse mobility needs of the elderly, technology acceptance among the elderly, social engagement and policy opportunities, risk perception, and accessibility of interactive technologies.

Conclusions

We identified the following future research directions in this area: (1) variations in diverse mobility requirements, (2) heterogeneity of roles among the elderly population, (3) acceptance of technology under trust-building, (4) perception of risks associated with AVs, (5) driving takeovers under the influence of multiple factors, (6) aging-friendly design in evaluation studies, and (7) policy contexts in elderly acceptance of AVs. These results provide reference value for future aging-friendly AV products and service systems.

The journal publishes original contributions that add to our understanding of the role of humans in today systems and the interactions thereof with various system components. The journal typically covers the following areas: industrial and occupational ergonomics, design of systems, tools and equipment, human performance measurement and modeling, human productivity, humans in technologically complex systems, and safety. The focus of the articles includes basic theoretical advances, applications, case studies, new methodologies and procedures; and empirical studies.
