Exploring experiential learning in short-term study abroad: Insights from Chinese students

This paper explores the experiential aspects of short-term study abroad (STSA) programmes for Chinese students participating in a short-term Sino-Canadian programme. Previous studies have mainly focused on assessing students’ achievement and learning effect, but this study investigates students’ specific learning processes and personal experiences. The research team used a critical incident technique to gain insight into participants’ overall experience by collecting their authentic accounts and narratives. Using situated learning theory as a theoretical lens, the study explores how learning occurs through interpersonal interaction in specific contexts. The results are grouped into three themes: exploring social and cultural practices, promoting professional growth, and developing personal attributes. The study contributes to the understanding of the significance of the learning process in the STSA context.
