Hallway Consultation: An Innovative Competency-Based Assignment
Purpose
Nurse practitioner students receiving competency-based education must demonstrate provision of comprehensive care. Innovative competency-based assignments designed to hone diagnostic and articulation skills prepare novices to deliver complicated care proficiently.
Methods
Across 2 cohorts, student perceptions of an innovative assignment called the Hallway Consultation were analyzed.
Results
Results from the “Perception of Non-Postgraduate Residents for One-Minute Preceptor in Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinical Teaching questionnaire” were favorable, indicating the competency-based assignment enhanced diagnostic reasoning, technical abilities, and communication.
Conclusions
Innovative assignments such as the Hallway Consultation should be included in nursing curriculum to effectively prepare providers for complex health care delivery.
