However, despite early optimism, radioimmunotherapy trials in the curative and metastatic settings have met with little success. In this Review, we summarise the immunostimulatory effects of radiotherapy that provided the theoretical basis for trials of combination radiotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors. We also discuss findings from clinical trials incorporating radiotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors and examine the success of these trials in the context of the immunosuppressive effects of radiotherapy.
