Based on the review of scientific literature, the paper identifies modern approaches to the essence of the category \"enterprise development\" (quantitative; qualitative; comprehensive; systemic; process-oriented approaches), within which development is considered from various perspectives, considering different levels of detail and defining various directions and forms. The paper considers the forms and types of enterprise development according to different classification criteria. External and internal factors that influence the enterprise development have been identified. Attention is focused on the fact that development can occur along various important areas: improvement of product quality; updating of product range and assortment; entering the market with new products; development and retention of existing market segments; enterprise reorganisation; rational use of production resources; creation of an attractive company and product image; enhancement of comprehensive utilization of natural resources, etc. The choice of the direction of development depends on the achieved level and further growth opportunities.
