Double-edged sword: How underdog expectations shape creativity
The underdog expectations effect is becoming more common in workplaces, but its influence on creativity has not been studied. Utilizing conservation of resources theory, we investigated the complex relationship between underdog expectations and creativity, and the mediating effects
of both perspective taking and emotional exhaustion. Results revealed that underdog expectations had both positive and negative impacts on creativity, depending on the mediators involved. The perceived value of innovation within an organization also had a moderating effect by either strengthening
or weakening these mediation effects: When innovation was highly valued, the positive effect was reinforced, while the negative effect was diminished. This research contributes to understanding of the underdog expectations effect in creativity contexts and emphasizes the role of organizational
culture in fostering innovation. The findings provide valuable insights for organizations aiming to create an innovative environment while harnessing the potential of underdog expectations.
