Babies cry for several reasons, the main one being to call for an adult (caregiver) to take care of them and ensure their survival. It is also thought to have a stress-relieving function, providing part of the baby’s emotional regulation, the other part being the containment provided by the attachment figure(s). The development of a baby’s crying follows certain invariants, but there are differences in terms of the amount of crying and consolability, which may be a function of the baby’s development and the responses given (mothering) to his crying. In some cases, crying may be linked to pathologies. Finally, when crying is “difficult to console”, it can have an impact on the parents’ mood, on the baby and on the early interactions that link this triad.
