The main themes that emerged were the challenges of parenting sons and daughters with intellectual disabilities; support from others; parent coping and self-care; and knowledge, certainty and control. Future research is needed from a variety of countries, cultures and a focus on fathers and older parents. Professionals should address parents’ psychological needs, provide practical and systemic support, and combat social stigma surrounding intellectual disabilities.
