Estilo de afrontamiento y calidad de vida en adolescentes con cáncer
Introduction
This study was conducted in order to describe the coping styles and the quality of life of a group of adolescents with cancer.
Material and method
Participants were 23 adolescents with a mean age of 16 years. Two tools were used to assess these variables: Coping Questionnaire for adolescents 3, the standardized version of the general form of Paediatric Quality of Life Inventory, and a semi-structured interview.
Results
A descriptive statistical analysis was performed on the results of the 2 tools, with a qualitative analysis for the interview. The most commonly used strategy was Religion, while Impotence and self-harm were the least frequent. This may be due to the value of the body and life in these adolescents. The adolescents reported a medium Quality of Life. The dimensions most affected were Emotional and Cognitive Discomfort, and Emotional functioning.
Conclusion
Adolescents with cancer use both coping styles and suffer a worsening of their Quality of Life in every stage of oncology process.
