The paper analyses the strategies for a holistic understanding of interdisciplinary design through literature review and theoretical case studies on function, shape, and structure. The case study evaluates new possibilities for designers to create objects with a holistic understanding of architectural and structural principles. The key findings show how geometric variables influence the final performance of the shape and the importance of proper topology optimisation at the early stage of the design process. The paper indicates that such an approach enables a better understanding of the structure and leads to designing efficiency.
