A multiprocessor-based architecture is proposed for a heterogeneous multimedia database (HMD) system, in order to provide fast and transparent multimedia services. The design philosophy of this architecture is based on functional requirements imposed by the multimedia services. The model of the HMD architecture has four components: a network controller, multimedia servers, a communication network, and the user components. Each component is shown to be responsible for a subset of functions that are vital for providing the desired services.<>
