Feasibility of determining diffusion characteristics of bioceramics using gamma scintigraphy
This study investigated the feasibility of determining an apparent diffusion coefficient for diffusion of technetium-99m-labeled albumin (MICROLITE/sup R/) through ZCAP (Zinc-Calcium-Phosphorous Oxide) ceramics. Gamma scintigraphy was used for non-invasive observation of diffusion. Data analysis assumed a well-mixed solution, steady-state conditions over the measurement time interval, and passive diffusion as the primary mode of mass transport through the ceramic. Attenuation of 140 keV gamma rays was found to be significant in ZCAP ceramic. Although the data obtained was not adequate to calculate an apparent diffusion coefficient, such a determination appears feasible with modifications to the test protocol.
