: The article analyzes the movie from Andrey Zwyagintsev titled The Banishment, from a cultural-theological perspective, concentrating the research on issues surrounding happiness and unhappiness. Despite the director’s movies not being confessional, in The Banishment we can find a consistent Christian vision of happiness, which is built on 3 pillars (particular parts of the thesis correspond to each one of them): which makes it possible to know the transcendent Truth, to repent and convert. The Banishment shows us that Christian happiness is not fully possible here on Earth, and that it frequently is a blessing in disguise – but it is consistent with the spirit of the Sermon on the Mount.
