Arguing that formula romances are a source of powerful influence, the author applies fantasy theme analysis to thirteen Cartland novels. The analysis reveals a vision which teaches readers three lessons about malelfemale relationships. First, desirable women are vulnerable, tractable, nurturing, self‐sacrificing, and spiritual. Second, undesirable women are assertive, persistent, independent, immoral, and sexual. Third, true love is powerful because it is based in female fear and sanctioned by a superhuman force.
