This chapter discusses the metallurgical considerations and process requirements of nitriding. It presents the pioneering work of Adolph Machlet and Adolph Fry. Following a presentation of Fry's work at the 1927 SME conference, American metallurgists began exploring nitriding processing parameters and the effects of alloying on the nitriding response of steels. Some of the more notable studies are also described in this chapter. The chapter also presents an outline of the current status of nitriding technology.
