A key component of the learning process in most engineering subjects is the solution and submission of set problems (assignment) followed by quick and accurate assessment and feedback. However, there are difficulties that can cripple the teaching, learning and assessment process, especially in very large classes. A new computer based system of individualised assignments is presented with details of its various components, student and staff responses and some of the results achieved. The new system fosters motivation, ensures minimum participation by all students and virtually eliminates plagiarism. Student attitudes towards tutorials, assignment work and their studies in general can be significantly improved. There are benefits for teaching staff also. The main cost is in the setting up of the system.<>
