Design of RGB Laser Diode Drivers for Smart Lighting and Li-Fi using MATLAB GUI
Lighting, and communication are the pillars of modern technology, the combination of which creates what is called smart lighting. This paper designs and implements red, green, and blue (RGB) laser diode drivers (LDDs) to be used in tandem and appropriately diffused, for the operation of white laser-based light. The resulting white light from the laser diodes is subsequently used in smart lighting systems, in which it couples as a transmitter in a visible light communication system, or Light Fidelity (Li-Fi); the sensitivity of this application creates the absolute must for efficient LDDs. First, the driver circuits are simulated in Multisim software according to the specifications of the laser diodes. The custom LDDs adjusts with an internal feedback system for current regulation and considers transient and electrostatic discharge protection. This project contributes massively to the next future groundbreaking advancement in technology of faster data transmission via Light-Fidelity, as the theoretical optical channel is mature, but the microelectronics aspect, which we tackle, is a hurdle. In order to demonstrate Visible Light Communication, the driver circuits are designed with a modulation capability for a suitable OOK modulation of the lasers at the transmitter side. Furthermore, a receiver circuit consisting of an LDR is utilized for efficient decoding of the received pulses. The transmitter and receiver are systemized with a user-friendly graphical user interface.
