To mitigate the various problems related to climate change, there should be advancement in renewable energy technology to cope today’s need of energy with maintaining sustainability in the environment. Biogas is a multifaceted energy source having various applications such as heating, cooking, lighting, electricity and if biogas is purified, it can be used as a source of fuel in vehicles. This chapter deals with recent advances and technological up-gradation in biogas technology along with previous research work, which will give comprehensive synopsis of knowledge gleaned. it also annotated regarding the digester design, contemplation of anaerobic digestion, strategies of pretreatment, phase separation and codigestion; enzymatic hydrolysis, microbial stairs for enhancing biogas production, cryogenic separation, different biological and biogas reforming technologies. Elimination of contaminants and utilization of various energy crops for increasing the efficiency of an anaerobic digester is also discussed in this chapter.
