Since nearly 3 decades, the Centre for the History of Education of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven has amassed a reputation worldwide for its research on the history of school education in the former Belgian Congo. Its focus has been on the Belgian as well as the Congolese, i.e. locally produced, schoolbooks, on the curricula, and on the colonialist underpinnings of the entire pedagogical project. Psychopedagogical research, albeit low-scale, was already carried out in the Congo during the colonial period, mainly by school inspector Oswald Liesenborghs. Similar initiatives were taken in the mother country. The present contribution aims at a critical examination of these endeavours.
