Recent economic and technological developments have made global conquest a distinct possibility. Communication satellites allow for continuous global surveillance and financial transactions. New trade agreements have boosted stateless trans-national corporations (TNCs) into commanding positions from which they determine the policies of most governments in the world. The concepts of nation states and national sovereignty are swiftly becoming eroded. We might be able to slow this process down a little. We know that unprincipled, unscrupulous people will use any means to further their own interests. The existing scientific community can be seen as the "enabler" which provides unscrupulous corporate/military types with the weapons, ideas and technologies they use to their advantage. Most large corporations retain highly-paid scientists who, like enabling mates, pretend everything is OK and look the other way when their masters immorally press the technological advantages which science provides. Some scientists go further. Some act as apologists and do their best to justify their master's abusive behaviour. To secure a sustainable future, science should not continue to be value-free, nor should it continue to be the enabler for corporate/military psychopaths.
