L’expression des relations hiérarchiques dans les inscriptions du Proche-Orient à l’époque romaine

A certain scarcity of honorary inscriptions is a startling feature of the Hellenistic and Roman Near East. However, the surviving examples— mostly the epigraphy of Palmyra much richer compared to neighboring regions— show that this region conformed to the habits of the Hellenistic world of the same period and followed the same standards (e. g. word order) despite the occasional use of Aramaic. However, among other things, the study of the concept of friendship, commonplace in classical epigraphy, shows that at Palmyra as at Hatra, other ways could be chosen to mark the hierarchies.
