God created the universe and this involved the spiritual dimension. Right after the good creation, evil came in to it. Mankind chose an alternative path instead of following God ́s instructions. The NT teaches that Satan is God ́s arch enemy. However, how is the word satan understood in the OT? This article studies how the Word satan is used in the OT, as well as the texts and contexts in which they appear (Job 1-2; Zech 3.1,2; 1Chr 21.1; Num 22.22,32) and attempts to understand how the canonical writers of the OT viewed satan. Satan is God ́s servant. He acts as an enemy toward God ́s people and maybe also as God ́s enemy, but he never acts independently. He is never at the same level as Yahweh; neither is he able to subvert Yahweh ́s plans. Satan is a title or function and not a name in the OT. For this reason it would be appropriate to translate satan as opponent or accuser instead of Satan as a proper name. This has the advantage of avoiding New Testament information being read into the OT about him.
