The Insight and Foresight of The Nigerian Power Transmission System: An Overview

One of the recipes for guaranteed economic growth in any nation is an efficient power system structure which provides continuous supply of electricity for businesses and individuals and the transmission infrastructure of any power system is critical to the supply of constant supply of electricity. The government of Nigeria in the last decade has embarked on several reforms aimed at improving the supply of electricity. Despite this effort a large majority of its over 183 million population still have no access to constant supply of electricity. One of the major reasons for this is the lack of an efficient transmission network which has resulted in frequent recurrent power outages. This paper therefore presents a retrospective insight into the Nigerian transmission system and foresight as well as assessing the opportunities and challenges in the power sector.
