Because of their quick response and accuracy of the vector control technique, vector controlled PMSM drives are good option for many applications. This work mainly deals with design and hardware implementation of vector controlled PMSM drive using dsPIC30F6010A controller. In order to complete the drive, field weakening region is also included. In field weakening region PI controller based parameter independent technique is implemented in hardware. Introduction of field weakening region made the drive robust to the DC link voltage drops. In this work mathematical model is derived initially, followed by design of PI controllers for the closed loop system. Stability analysis is done in order to prove the robustness of the design. Later simulation studies are carried out before going for hardware implementation. Necessary hardware was built and the vector control along with field weakening region is implemented using a low cost DSP by using inline assembly coding.
