Integrated Modelling Environment: a platform for dynamic protection modelling and advanced functionality
This paper summarises work undertaken in collaboration with The National Grid Company (NGC) to investigate the performance of dynamic models of the protection system. Models of commercially available relays have been developed, based on the manufacturers' specifications and algorithms. The concept of an Integrated Modelling Environment (IME) with an open architecture which can utilise (as input) primary power system simulation results obtained from the standard EMTP program, as well as actual fault records from the network, is presented. Case studies are presented to illustrate the capabilities of the IME, specifically involving the study of distance and unit protection scheme performance. Among other benefits, the paper also indicates the possible use of the IME as a Protection System Design Validation Tool. The outcome of this work has been validated by protection engineers and contributes to the improvement of the reliability and security of the protection system.
