Analysis of a Hydrodynamic Thrust Bearing Operated under Unsymmetrical Conditions
Analytical solutions for the pressure, load capacity, friction, and flow of a Michell thrust bearing in asymmetric operation are presented. The flow developed in this bearing is asymmetric because the surface rotation axis is offset from the bearing sector axis. These bearings are used with circular saws to constrain transverse displacement of the blades. The pressure, load capacity, friction, and flow increase significantly with offset of the bearing and rotation axes, and they are sensitive to the sector orientation. Results are presented for two sector angles and a complete range of orientations.
