Retuning controllers employed in a real plant is a formidable task for the process control engineer. The self-tuning(auto-tuning) controllers offer an alternative solution of this problem. The self-tuning controllers are being extensively used in industrial processes of different physical nature. This paper shows the fundamental system models and different controllers, and how they relate to instrument and process-oriented systems. The various digital control strategies and conventional algorithms of digital controllers are reviewed. Each design procedure is investigated and guidelines for selecting suitable values for the system parameters are discussed. The technical audit and interpretation contribute further insights into the existing restraints.<>
