Technology Content Assessment for Technology Development in Small Medium Enterprise (SME) of Wood Furniture: A Case Study
Technology is the core of the transformation activities of natural resources into produced resources. It can expand the utilization of resources for promoting economic growth as well as increase the output to be more efficient and productive utilization. The technology consists of four basic components namely Technoware, Humanware, Inforware, and Orgaware (THIO) which are complementary to one another. The concept of technology-based development plays an important role to analyze the level of technology in an organization. However, the development and assessment of technology have become difficult in many developing countries because of a lack of appreciation for the differences between science and technology including their interrelationships and the tendency to treat technology as a “black box” without examining the characteristics of the technology itself. This research aims to assess the level of technology at 6 small-medium enterprises (SME) in Yogyakarta that producing wood furniture such as a set of tables and chairs. THIO can be used as a benchmark to determine an improvement strategy for an organization. Technology assessment is useful as a benchmark to determine an improvement strategy for an organization in terms of technoware, humanware, inforware, and orgaware.
