Internet-based assessments became a part of research methodology in the 1990s as the Internet moved into mainstream use. Originally met with skepticism, there is evidence that data collected with this methodology are valid, and these methods are now used to collect data in a variety of studies. The advantages of Internet-based assessments include reduced burden for both participants and researchers, greater disclosure from individuals, and better access to hard-to-reach populations including isolated older adults. As technology advances, these types of assessments are evolving beyond personal computers to deployment using mobile devices.
