Icing on the overhead transmission lines cause great accidents and vast economic loss. In China, icing monitoring technology and relative research is a hot point. The current operating icing monitoring systems based on electrical measurement do not work efficiently because it cannot solve the problem of electromagnetic interference with power supply. The fiber optic sensors, with light as the measurement media, solve those problems perfectly. In this paper, an icing monitoring system based on Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors is proposed.
