The status of multigigabit direct/direction lightwave systems is reviewed. Demonstrated aggregate bit rates for electrically time division multiplexed (ETDM), optically time division multiplexed (OTDM), and wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) laboratory lightwave systems are shown. ETDM systems place the most severe demands on electronic and optoelectronic components, but the simplicity and economy of such systems continue to make them attractive. The ETDM system is a building block for OTDM and WDM systems. The potential and limitations of present system components are examined, and the promise of new technologies is explored. Transmitters, fibers, repeaters, receivers, and electronic components are discussed.<>
