Comparative analysis between IEEE 802.11 and S-MAC
The Wireless Sensor Network technology has a great importance in present day scenario due to its novel approaches and versatility in its use. Still the technology is endeavoring against many challenges. The basic functionality of Wireless Sensor Network is to provide mobility. By designing the network and nodes, providing mobility to the nodes results into many other problems. Like energy efficiency, common coverage problem, hidden terminal problem, ideal listening and many more. In general scenarios, the IEEE 802.11 standard which is also termed as Wi-Fi, is popular. Medium Access Control Protocol plays a vital role in terms of managing the main resource that is channel or bandwidth in between nodes. The paper comprises of few techniques adapted by S-MAC protocol which improves throughput, number of packets lost and packet delivery ratio in comparison to IEEE 802.11 standards. The simulation of the IEEE 802.11 and S-MAC is made in this paper.
