It is usually performed when abnormalities are found on clinical examination and/or on resting or stress echocardiograms, and is particularly helpful for differential diagnosis of pathological conditions at risk for sudden cardiac death such as hypertrophic, dilated, arrhythmogenic, or non-compaction cardiomyopathies.
