INTRODUCTION: In the health care worker establishes a new way of understanding the relationship between health and work and proposes a new practice of health care and intervention in work environments coupled with the perception of the worker about their work environment and experiences of situations of wear. OBJECTIVE: To determine the role of the nurse in the Labor Occupational Health Service in the different levels of care: primary, secondary and tertiary. METHODS: This was a qualitative descriptive approach, where the method used was the literature review. Data were collected from scientific articles and literature available on the internet, in english, from 1997 to 2011. RESULTS: The extent of the worker's health projects the development of services exempted in Occupational Health for the well being of workers in connection with the promotion and prevention of health hazards. Targeting this welfare, it is necessary a continuous and systematic vision over time in order to detect, understand, research and analyze the determinants and constraints of health problems related to the processes and work environments in their technological aspects social, organizational, epidemiological, with the purpose of planning, implementing and evaluating interventions on these aspects in order to eliminate them or control them, where it operates the Occupational Health Surveillance. The nurse’s work is part of the development of these different levels of care, such as primary, secondary and tertiary, each with their nursing actions, which states that the primary care health promotion and specific protection, secondary care, includes early diagnosis, prompt service and damage limitation, and, tertiary care, rehabilitation and reintegration of the worker to his work environment. CONCLUSION: With so many performances and functions in relation to Occupational Health, the Labor Nurse is a professional multifunctional because it acts decisively in administrative, care, teaching and research areas, as part of executives in companies/industries and services occupational health. This is an important professional for proper development of prevention strategies linked to the promotion of workers' health.
